Overview
The Chinese Bridge Summer Camp is an elite two-week intensive Mandarin language and Chinese culture training program for high school students. The camp is organized by the Hanban (Office of Chinese Language Council International), a government office of the People's Republic of China that promotes the teaching of Chinese language and culture worldwide. During the 2-week program students will have the opportunity to develop their language skills by attending a variety of classes, interacting with Chinese students, and participating in field trips and sightseeing activities.

Program Itinerary and Costs
The program will take place in the July 16 - 31 this year. Participants will first attend an opening ceremony in Beijing and participate in cultural activities, such as visiting the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Bird's Nest and the Water Cube. They will also travel to another city (TBA)in China for language and cultural training. Teachers and students will then return to Beijing where they will depart for the US.

Students and teachers are responsible for securing round-trip international airfare, a China tourist visa, and international travel insurance. Hanban will cover other program costs including housing, food, instructional costs, and domestic travel within China. Teachers must bring at least 9 students for these expenses to be covered.

Application Guidelines
This program is open to 8 - 12 grade students only. Each school group must have an accompanying teacher who will escort the group to and from China, and who will remain with them throughout the duration of the program. Applications by individual students can NOT be accommodated. The program is designed for serious students with excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in China. To apply for the program, teachers should have their students complete an online application form and submit the requested supplemental materials (a passport-sized photo, one recommendation letter) by April 30, 2011. Hanban will make final decisions on student applications.

Chinese Culture and Food Festival
Award, Celebration

Sunday, May 15, 2011, 2:00 - 3:40 pm

Our Final Project for this school year for all students is to research on one of the eight major Chinese Regional Cuisines, and on Saturday, May 14, each family to bring a homemade dish from that region to share at our potluck party.

A draft of the research report should be turned in on May 1.  Research reports will be displayed at the party, and students are to introduce their special food and related culture.  Class performances, awards individual performances and games are also on the agenda.

Each student has been assigned a randomly chosen region.  For young students, parents will need to help their online research.  If your student(s) did not receive the handout with a specified region, or you prefer to a region other than the assigned, please feel free to choose one from the below list or any other your favorite Chinese regions:

Sichuan Cuisine/Chuan Cuisine,  Hunan Cuisine/Xiang Cuisine,  Guangdong Cuisine/Cantonese Food
Shandong Cuisine,  Jiangsu Cuisine,  Zhejiang Cuisine,  Fujian Cuisine,  Anhui Cuisine.
